Teos kuuluu vuosien 1995-1997 aikana valmistuneeseen 20-osaiseen monotypioiden sarjaan nimeltä Esse | Olla. Esse on latinaa ja verbin 'olla' infinitiivimuoto. Sarja käsitteli hyvin abstraktisti mm. "olemassolon tunnetta", hetken kokemusta ja elämän katkeamista.

Öljyvärimaalausta muistuttavan, mutta grafiikan syväpainoprässillä painettavan maalauksellisen monotypian menetelmän olin oppinut yhdysvaltalaisen taiteilijan ja kokeellisen taidegrafiikan pajan, International Institute of Experimental Printmaking, perustajan Garner Tullisin pitämällä mestarikurssilla Jyväskylän Grafiikanpajalla vuonna 1992.

Esse-sarjan teoksia oli yksityisnäyttelyssäni Taidegraafikot -galleriassa Helsingissä vuonna 1996. Sarjan teos numero XII kuuluu Henna ja Pertti Niemistön nykytaiteen kokoelmaan ja teos numero IX hankittiin Postin taidekokoelmiin.

Pandemian aikana on hyvä muistella ja olla kiitollinen hyvistä hetkistä. Taaksepäin katsominen oli syy valita tämän kauden teokseksi hieman vanhempi teos. #pidähuolta #pesekädet #pysykotona #luotaelämään #taidekokemus

The artwork is part of the series Esse | To Be. The series consists of 20 monotypes from 1995 to 1997. Esse is the main form of the latin verb 'to be'. The title of the series refers to the experiences of existing, living the moment and passing away.

The technique of the 'painterly monotype' resembling that of oil painting was taught to me by Garner Tullis, American artist and founder of the International Institute of Experimental Printmaking on a master class held by him at the Jyväskylä Printshop in 1992.

The series was shown in my solo exhibition at Taidegraafikot Gallery in Helsinki in 1996. One of the monotypes (XII) was bought to the Henna and Pertti Niemistö Contemporary Art Collection and another one (IX) to the art collection of the Post of Finland.
